Since November 2012 tyre information labels have been compulsory in the EU. The labels are to be visible to the consumer at the point of sale and in a format that is well understood from previous labelling schemes (similar to those used on white goods such as washing machines and refrigerators).
The information is not exhaustive as only fuel efficiency (rolling resistance), wet braking performance and exterior noise emissions are covered, but even with this limited data a purchaser will be able to make an informed choice more quickly than before. The specialist automotive press will remain the primary source of in-depth testing for the more discerning consumer.
Winter tyres are subject to the same tests as summer tyres and the results on these are more difficult to interpret. In an ideal world there would be a dedicated test and labelling system for them, but this is not yet available.
